Details

This handle operated the mechanical brake of one of the J.G. Brill Company manufactured H&F Interurban Combines.  The handle would be attached to a vertical pole to the right of the motorman.  A ratchet system on the floor would hold the pole in position when the handle was rotated, with a foot activated release switch in order to allow the brake handle to be rotated in the opposite direction for release.

This brake would be applied similarly to a parking brake, keeping the car securely stopped while passengers boarded and disembarked.
