H&F Commutation Book 10183

This is one example of a Commutation Book provided by the Hagerstown & Frederick Railway Company.  This particular book was purchased by Mt. Lena resident Roy Hoffman for travel between Boonsboro and Mt. Lena for school.

Commutation Books were booklets of tickets in various increments purchased by individuals who commuted regularly.  They were presented to the conductor or motorman upon boarding.  Some were booklets of small 3/4-inch tall tear tabs such as this booklet while others were full page tickets.  The crewman accepting fare would tear one from the book each trip and place it with the cash fares being accepted.
